Affiliate programs vs brand deals, and when to do both
Affiliate programs and brand deals are two different ways to earn from the same audience, and creators often treat them as either-or. They are not. Once you know when each one wins, you can put both on a single collaboration and get paid a flat fee and a commission from the same piece of content.
The difference in one line
A brand deal pays you a flat fee to make content. An affiliate program pays you a commission on the sales your link or code drives. One is guaranteed money for the work, the other is money that scales with results.
When a flat fee wins
Take the flat fee when you want certainty, when the brand is unproven with your audience, or when the product is expensive to buy so few will convert on impulse. A guaranteed fee pays you for your time no matter how the sales land, which matters when you cannot predict them.
When commission wins
Commission wins when you know your audience buys the product, when it is affordable and easy to convert, and when you can post about it more than once. A link you would recommend anyway can quietly out-earn a one-off fee over time, especially on evergreen content that keeps getting seen.
Stack both on one deal
The best outcome is not choosing. Keep your flat sponsorship fee and ask to add a trackable affiliate link or code on top. It costs the brand nothing up front, it shows them the sales you drive, and it gives you a second income stream from the exact same content.
The ask to add an affiliate link to a paid post
Hi [name], for the sponsored [video] we agreed, could we also add a trackable affiliate link or code. I would keep the flat fee as is, and the link just lets us both see the sales it drives, with a commission on top. It costs nothing extra up front and gives us a clear reason to do more together if it performs.
Set your links up once
If affiliate income is going to be part of your mix, get organised early. The affiliate kit helps you gather your links and codes in one place so you can drop the right one into any post without hunting for it.
